HEART 9/11 Returns To Haiti

Friday, April 9th, 2010

H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 has returned to Port au Prince, Haiti on Monday, April 05, 2010 to begin work on a project that will see four 1,500 gallon water storage tanks built to replace a destroyed 6,000 gallon tank at the Jesuit Novitiate there. H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 members from the New York area and H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 members from the Florida International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental & Reinforcing Ironworkers Union Local 272 are joining forces with fifteen Jesuit novitiates to get the project completed. These students, who range in age from 18 to 35, will be trained in the construction skills necessary to do such a job. This quid pro quo arrangement will prepare these young Haitian men to take these skills and continue the rebuilding for their local communities. Thanks to the sponsorship of Jefferies  & Co, H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 is keeping its promise to continue bringing help to the Haitian people. There are several other projects being looked at in and around Port au Prince. There is much to do and, be assured, we will stay focused on our mission. We have received many positive responses from our membership letting us know that we have their ongoing support.

We will be in touch with our H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 team in Haiti and report on their progress.

H.E.A.R.T. 9/11’s Latest Project Completion

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 is proud to announce the completion of our latest project. We had offered H.E.A.R.T. 9/11’s services to a very worthy group. It is called “Friends of Firefighters”. This community-based organization is a nonprofit entity devoted to firefighters and their families. You can read all about them by clicking on: FRIENDS of FIREFIGHTERS

We answered their request to remodel a building in the Redhook section of Brooklyn located at 199 Van Brunt Street. It was once the former quarters of FDNY Engine 202 - Ladder 101. H.E.A.R.T. 9/11’s mission is to transform the second floor into several offices for counseling, create an area for physical therapy, and also remodel a kitchen and bathroom. This project was conducted over several weekends in April and May and had H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 board member John Viola in charge.

The response of our members was overwhelming and very gratifying. Throughout the three weekends we spent at the location we had a coalition of members from across the spectrum of occupations, crafts and endeavors. H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 wishes to thank all involved in making this a complete success. They include our members from the Construction & General Building Laborers’ Local 79 (Jose Chicas, in charge), FDNY active and retired, NYPD, PAPD, Sept 11 National Museum Staff, Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance Staff, Johnny Wund’s crew, individual volunteers and interns, and, of course, Friends of Firefighters led by Nancy Carbone. H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 President Bill Keegan, assisted by Keith Flyer, John Stack, Tony Sanpietro and Paul Dessert, were also on site lending a hand where needed to get the job done.

Andrew Robinson and wife Sara make their way up their new driveway past the crowd honoring him.

On Monday, November 10, 2008, H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 President Bill Keegan, along with a contingent of H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 members, participated in a ceremony to turn over the keys of their newly constructed home to United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Andrew Robinson and his wife Sara.

The event left the young Marine and his wife speechless. Attended by many dignitaries, friends and well wishers, the day was doubly satisfying for S/Sgt Andrew Robinson because it was also the US Marine Corps’ birthday.
