9/11 Memorial & Museum - In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11 Inspired Service

  • 9/11 Memorial & Museum 180 Greenwich Street New York, New York United States (map)

In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11-Inspired Service examines the enduring impact of the countless acts of service that followed September 11. Individuals and communities transformed grief into action, and their efforts have touched lives across the country and around the world.

In the wake of the loss and destruction of September 11, 2001, many people felt compelled to help. Individual acts of service in response to 9/11 have rippled out over a quarter of a century as more have been called to action by both the tragedy and courage of that day. This exhibition highlights stories of lives that altered course in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and in the years later. Some changed professions or pursued careers in service of their community or country. Others continued to volunteer, taking lessons from their 9/11 service around the world. Organizations that started with an act of 9/11-related service continue their work with expanded missions. A quarter century later, an enduring legacy of 9/11 is the acts of compassion and service it inspired.

The exhibit features two items from HEART 9/11: a signed Cleon Jones baseball from our Africatown, Alabama, community rebuild and the Little Golden Book “Heidi”,
which was found in the mud during last year’s Texas Flood Response.
