Eight letters, recognized the world over, have come to define the safety, security and spirit of New York City: FDNY, NYPD. The New York Construction Building Trades, without whom the 9/11 response would not have been possible, provide HEART 9/11 with building and demolition experts who built this NY metropolis. These are the men and women we trust in times of triumph and tragedy; silhouettes seared into our hearts and minds as they emerged from the shadows of 9/11, where we were brought to our knees, but came together at Ground Zero – First Responders and the Greater NY Building Trade Members alike – to recover and rebuild. These are the expert volunteers of HEART 9/11. Founded in 2007, HEART 9/11, is now over 530 strong – FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, NYC Building Trade Members and surviving family members of those killed on September 11, 2001 – an expert led, volunteer driven non-profit disaster relief organization committed to rebuilding not only property following a disaster but also lives. Because our members were experienced being victims (9/11) we understand the challenges in turning victims into survivors. HEART 9/11 works with mental health partners to bridge victims with mental health professionals. We rebuild lives in three ways: emergency response to disaster stricken communities, facilitation of mental health and build housing for wounded returning veterans.
